Heritage Impact

The highway project “Hekmeh-Turk” axi (Fouad Boutros road) will cause the demolition of around 30 buildings, many of which are of heritage value. The following photographic survey lists most (but not all) of the buildings that will be destroyed.

Note that the project will also directly endanger 30 more buildings, through real-estate pressure and the degradation of their environement due to their close proximity to the highway.

  1. This website gives a very complete overview of all the Hekmeh-Turk Highway project’s destructive consequences and aims to protect the heritage and environment of Hekmeh neighborhood with the park proposal. But both the “moratoire” in french and Lina Mneimeh’s project don’t mention the inhabitants of the expropriated buildings in their plans. Also, they don’t take into consideration that this very valuable project could be a threat to the social fabric of the quarter, middle-classes that could be replaced by upper-classes by the higher renting or buying prices. Developing cultural and commercial activities in this neighborhood will be done at the expense of expelling these people? Does the civil coalition shares the municipality’s views on the inhabitants of the buildings (considering them as illegal squatters)? Thank you
